Pride, Envy, Greed, Wrath, Gluttony, Lust, and Sloth are the seven deadly sins carved and sculpted in marble that the international artist Alex Caminiti brings to Rome at KOU Gallery on the occasion of RAW 2024.
One of the most significant exponents of contemporary Sicilian art, Alex Caminiti uses painting, sculpture, performance, and video to explore humanity’s need to rediscover itself in all its uniqueness and complexity, embracing every aspect of being in order to fully inhabit its own authenticity. Caminiti is a multifaceted artist driven by the desire to communicate and provoke reflection on the experiences and emotions of our present. His varied expressive languages and media focus attention on universal themes and values that define our identity.
The seven deadly sins can be viewed in parallel with the seven opposing virtues: the three Theological Virtues (Faith, Hope, and Charity) and the four Cardinal Virtues (Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, and Temperance). However, Caminiti’s seven sins are engraved in marble because, as the artist warns us, they are dead and buried. According to recent surveys, they are no longer relevant: today, the leading “sins” are cruelty, fanaticism, dishonesty, hypocrisy, greed, adultery, and selfishness.
