Kintsugi is a Japanese ceramic restoration technique dating back to the late 1400s. The Japanese term “kintsugi” comes from “kin” (literally meaning “gold”) and “tsugi” (meaning “rejoining, reunion, repair”).
Westerners usually glue broken objects, hiding the cracks as much as possible, or even discard them reluctantly because they are considered valuable. In Japan, however, the breaking of a bowl, vase, or teapot becomes an opportunity to make it even more precious.
This ancient art conveys a valuable life lesson, which underlies resilience, inspired by the skilled technique of highlighting the fractures of broken objects and repairing them with the most precious material in nature: Gold.
