The exhibition has been extended until September 16, 2022
The exhibition will feature works from her most recent production, alternating drawing, text, embroidery, printing, along with the use of unconventional techniques such as pink wax, with which she intervenes on textile materials mostly belonging to ancient trousseaux.
The trousseau—a set of clothes, linen, and other accessories a bride brings as a dowry into her new home—becomes the privileged support of her works and a starting point for investigating the condition of women and their roles as wives and mothers.
For the first time, some works from Laura Mega’s most recent artistic research will also be exhibited, exploring the three-dimensional possibilities of so-called “soft art,” i.e., carpet-sculptures made with the Tufting Gun.
“ThePinkSide of WTF,” taking its title from the artist’s latest book, flips the surface of an everyday life that is as intimate as it is political, with a boldly humorous gaze, yet only seemingly playful.
Through an eccentric and contemporary language, Mega transforms testimonies of constrained and predefined femininity into works capable of investigating and conveying poetic, social, and political issues, where the ironic touch leaves the observer responsible for the possible depth of interpretation.
The solo exhibition at KOU Gallery precedes and creates a conceptual dialogue with Laura Mega’s participation in the Ivy Brown Gallery group exhibition in New York (opening July 7), where a bolder political reading on the choices of the U.S. healthcare system and women’s rights will take center stage.
