Francesco Impellizzeri was born in Trapani in 1958 and graduated in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where he lives and works.

In the mid-1980s he began a pictorial exploration of sign/color in relation to music and rhythm.

1986 marks his first solo exhibition in Rome, “Pulsioni Blu Cobalto,” at the Underwood Gallery.

His exhibition career continued with major group shows such as “Pittori & Pittori” at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation in Venice in 1988.

For his 1990 solo show at Temple Gallery in Rome, he presented his first performance, “Strilli.” From that moment on, performances multiplied, and stereotyped characters emerged, while photography, painting, and video became integral to his exhibitions.

The following year he exhibited at the Italian Cultural Institute in Algiers for the show “Proposizioni Romane,” beginning a period of exhibitions and performances including “Colori Sonori” at La Nuova Pesa in Rome, “Canzoni in Vetrina per la Biennale” at Fiorella Gallery in Venice in 1993, “Besos, Canciones, Santos y Estrellas” at the Ateneu de Cadaqués in Spain in 1994, and “Giochi di Corte o di Cortile” at the Trevi Flash Art Museum in Trevi (PG).

For “Artists' Choice” at the American Academy in Rome in 1995, he presented the installation “C’è una casa bianca che….” and the performances “L’Angelo Candito” on the Valadier Tower at Ponte Milvio in Rome and “Larvamento amoroso di Rokkodrillo” in Polignano a Mare (BA), curated by Galleria Zelig.

In 1997 he began a decade-long collaboration with Espacio Mínimo Gallery in Madrid.

In Italy in 1999 he presented the performance “Desfilè: mannequin per nient” for the exhibition “Corporea” at Rivara Castle (TO), later performed again in 2005 at Villa Manin in Passariano (UD).

“Meteorismi,” shown at Il Ponte Contemporanea Gallery in 2000, is an ironic installation shaped like little clouds.

In 2001 he took part in “Neue Heimat” at the Falzone Gallery in Mannheim (Germany), presented the performance “Gnam, Gnam” at MACRO in Rome, and “Motocicletta” at Forum Fabricum in Łódź and the C. Art Center in Poznań.

The following year he participated in “Il Sogno, il Colore, il Segno,” presented at the Italian Cultural Center in Istanbul, Amman, and the Italian Cultural Institute in Ankara.

In 2003, after being included by Spanish critic Paco Barragán in the book “El Arte que viene,” he was invited to the exhibition “Don’t call it performance,” which began at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, continued across major Spanish museums, and concluded at the Museo del Barrio in New York.

Also in New York, he took part in the 2003 exhibition “Young Italian Genome” at BUIA Gallery.

In 2003 he introduced the “Pensierini,” which replace sung words with elementary-school notebook pages commenting on cultural, political, and private events seen through childlike eyes, yet revealing the ironic world he has always expressed.

In 2004 they were featured in “Pensierini, Palabras y…” at Espacio Mínimo Gallery in Madrid, “Melting Pop” at Palazzo delle Papesse in Siena, and in “Progetto Vema” in 2006 at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

In 2006 he created the performance “ArtSaint Loop” at the ARCO Fair in Madrid for the Espacio Mínimo Gallery booth.

In 2007 the performance “Motocicleta” was presented at DA2 Contemporary Art Museum in Salamanca (Spain), and the solo show “Riassunto: Pensierini, parole e…..” at Bonelli Arte Contemporanea Gallery in Mantua. In 2008 his works became part of the Collection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome.

His new pictorial phase “Per l’Appunto” was shown for the first time in 2009 in the exhibition “L’Arabesco” at Santo Ficara Gallery in Florence.

At MLAC at Sapienza University of Rome in 2010, an exhibition was held featuring 20 videos of his most significant performances, along with a large collection of costumes, photos, works, gadgets, projects, and stage objects.

In 2011 he created the performance “Qui la luce è differente” at the ITC in Strasbourg and participated in “L’intreccio dei viaggi” for the Termoli Prize at the Civic Gallery of Contemporary Art in Termoli.

He exhibited in Gibellina (TP) and the following year took part in “Siamo tutti Greci” at the Benaki Museum in Athens.

He showed in “Il Corpo Solitario” at Palazzo della Penna in Perugia in 2014, and in 2015 took part in “Le Volets de Noël” in the Ville de Biot, France.

“M’è nnata un’idea” is the title of a new performance at Fondazione Menna in Rome, dedicated to Filiberto Menna and Maria Lai.

In 2017 he participated in “Lights and Transparencies” at Galerie Étienne de Causans in Paris.

In 2019 he exhibited in “El Último Espaliù” at the Royal Spanish Academy in Rome and created the installation “Souvenir” for the Museum of Mediterranean Weaves in Gibellina, while the work “Art Saint Loop presenta” from the Farnesina Collection in Rome was shown at the National Coach Museum in Lisbon and the following year at the Italian Cultural Institute in Paris.

In his most recent works, the color of his early chromatic research merges with silver-painted texts, also presented through installations enriched with sound or musical performances.

In addition to numerous exhibitions in galleries, museums, and international fairs, he has participated in various television programs and films.
