Born in Zavia, Libya, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 1981 and has lived and worked in Rome for over 35 years.
Alongside numerous solo exhibitions in Italy (Milan, Rome, Bologna, Parma, Taormina, Latina, Alessandria), he held two retrospectives at the Petofi Museum in Budapest (1997) and at the Societad Nationales de Belas Artes in Lisbon (2000). In Italy, he participated in the XII Quadriennale of Rome, the 'Giganti' exhibition at the Foro di Nerva in 1999, the LXI Premio Michetti in 2010, the 'Close Up' exhibition at Palazzo Collicola in Spoleto in 2015, the 'Le altre opere, artisti che collezionano artisti' project at the Galleria Comunale di Arte Moderna in Rome in 2021, and won the Ecco Echo Prize in 2021. In 2022 he exhibited at Galleria 28 Piazza di Pietra and the Egyptian Cultural Institute in Rome ('13 artisti per 13 obelischi'), and at Fondazione Primoli ('D’Après – 18 artisti per 18 quadri amati da Marcel Proust'). In 2023 he participated in 'Infinito Vicino' at Palazzo Orsini, Bomarzo.
His works have been shown in various public and museum spaces in Rome including the Vittoriano, Museo del Corso, MACRO, Palazzo Poli, Museo Nazionale d’Arte Orientale Giuseppe Tucci, Galleria Comunale d’Arte Moderna, Collezione Farnesina, and Orto Botanico. Internationally, he exhibited in public spaces (Ostenda, Darmstadt, European Parliament in Brussels, Adelaide, Perth, Islamabad) and private galleries (New York, Washington, Istanbul, Cairo, Paris, Belgrade).
His work has been the subject of two theses: “Temi dechirichiani nella pittura di Massimo Livadiotti: gli anni 80” at the Faculty of Letters, La Sapienza University of Rome (2004/2005), and a monographic thesis “Massimo Livadiotti” at the Academy of Fine Arts of Catania (2007/2008).
His works are included in the Collezione Farnesina, MACRO Rome, GNAM, Bulgari Collection, Agrati Collection, Pontifical Institute of Sacred Archaeology in Rome, INPS headquarters in Rome, National Gallery Islamabad, and Piazza Dante in Rome (ceramic works).
