Paolo Assenza

Paolo Assenza was born in 1974 in Rome, where he lives and works. He graduated in Scenography from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where he was a student of art historian Alberto Boatto, among others. In the 1990s he trained as an artist in contact with many artists on the Roman scene, including Bruno Aller, Maurizio Mochetti (whose assistant he was), the exponents of the historic Gruppo Uno (Achille Pace, Nato Frascà, Ninì Santoro, Nicola Carrino), and the Roman School of Via degli Ausoni in San Lorenzo, in the years between 1996 and 2009, when he had his studio in front of Palazzo Cerere. More recently he joined the Castello di Rivara directed by Franz Paludetto. His work moves transversally from painting to installation and video, mediums through which he constantly experiments while maintaining a preferred relationship with painting. He has taken part in numerous national and international exhibitions and his works are present in public and private collections. In 2014 he was one of the founders of SpazioY, an experimental and independent venue for Contemporary Art in the Roman suburbs, an activity that has seen him organise and curate numerous exhibitions, and which opened a new branch in Palermo for the Manifesta 12 Biennial, an experience that is also intended as an "artistic action" in which the research exhibition space is understood as a space for artistic/political/social confrontation, a cultural project necessary today through which it is possible to re-formulate a contemporary experience akin to those of the avant-garde already known in the historical artistic panorama.

The activity of the exhibition space has been the subject of numerous articles in the trade press, and on the occasion of the first edition of Nesxt (festival on independent realities, directed by Olga Gambari), it was selected among the 20 most representative independent realities on the national territory.
