La der des der

One day, while watching the news, Simon Rosenberg discovers that the centenary of the First World War is being commemorated, and he painfully recalls that he has survived it… And since he has well surpassed a hundred years, he wonders if he might be one of the last survivors, maybe the very last… who knows? Then he decides to show himself and speak to the press. He is alone; his children and wife passed away long ago. He suffers everywhere and wants to leave this world… but he is afraid. These commemorations awaken in him the smell of burning flesh, shattered bodies, screams, relentless bombings, men going insane, this suffering that eats away at brain and guts and keeps one awake for years. Simon lives, in solitude for a long time, entangled in his guilt for surviving hell, with only a television and a nurse who comes twice a day as company. Simon cannot die, as if something keeps him alive, as if he wants to bear witness for future generations.

Yes, Simon wants to confess, but his greatest fear is that no one will care about his testimony! Does the 14/18 war still interest the younger generations? Simon carries a secret like a burden; only he knows that he could have changed the course of world history. This is what he wants to share, this is what he will do. Will he still have the strength to face the arrogance of an inept and shallow editor, who shows no empathy? And it is finally a woman, an esteemed journalist who stands out through her character and resilience, Samia Zitouni, who visits Simon and realizes that yes, the course of history can be changed by the simplest movement of a finger, just as a butterfly’s wing beat can trigger a tornado on the other side of the world.
