Margherita Cerioni is a young photographer and visual artist from Rome. She holds a degree in Communication and is currently pursuing a two-year Master’s programme in Editorial Photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.
Her photographic research, attentive to contemporary society and its transformations, takes photojournalism as its starting point only to subvert its conventions. The result is a visually striking aesthetic experience that moves from reality towards abstraction, becoming a form of silent criticism.
In June 2026, she was selected for the Visual Arts section of Dominio Pubblico – Youth Fest, participating in the group exhibition Coordinate dello sguardo / Sorgenti at Teatro India in Rome with her photographic project Com’è bella la città (How Beautiful the City Is). By juxtaposing photographs taken in 2019 inside Rome’s former wholesale markets (Ex Mercati Generali) with images from the demonstration held on 2 October 2025 in support of the Palestinian cause, Cerioni explores how urban space changes its meaning when inhabited and occupied by bodies. Her work focuses on those moments when the city interrupts its relentless rhythm of growth and acceleration, opening itself up to unexpected uses and forms of human interaction.
She is currently developing a project dedicated to urban waste, in which discarded materials are transformed into terrestrial or stellar landscapes through a photographic approach based on colour and the alternation of sharp and blurred images, with varying degrees of exposure. These compositions ultimately become visual scores, revealing unexpected aesthetic possibilities within the remnants of urban life.
